Nu Rho Psi
Smith and The University of Massachusetts host a joint chapter of Nu Rho Psi - the National Neuroscience Honors Society!
Nu Rho Psi is the National Honor Society in Neuroscience, founded in 2006 by the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience. The purpose of Nu Rho Psi is to: (1) encourage professional interest and excellence in scholarship, particularly in neuroscience; (2) award recognition to students who have achieved such excellence in scholarship; (3) advance the discipline of neuroscience; (4) encourage intellectual and social interaction between students, faculty, and professionals in neuroscience and related fields; (5) promote career development in neuroscience and related fields; (6) increase public awareness of neuroscience and its benefits for the individual and society; and (7) encourage service to the community.
While the Smith-UMass Chapter of Nu Rho Psi is just in its infancy (started in spring 2008), we are working steadily to increase its visibility on both campuses as well as strengthen the communication and bond between the two schools. This summer we plan on working to bring Amherst College into our chapter. Our long-term vision is to recruit all 5 colleges in the consortium. Currently, the executive committee consists of a President (Nina Waldron, Smith College), Vice President (Celeste DiGloria, UMass), Treasurer (Martha Luitje, Smith College), Secretary (Andrea Simoni, UMass), and Social Chair (Bryce Bludevich, Smith College).
Recruitment is scheduled to start in early February 2011 and culminate with the initiation ceremony in late February. We hope that our efforts to increase Nu Rho Psi’s visibility throughout fall semester will target and enthuse a large number of potential new members. With this base, we hope to further improve the communication and activity between Nu Rho Psi students on both campuses and host Nu Rho Psi socials and educational events between the schools. Upon graduation, all Nu Rho Psi scholars receive graduation cords to wear in recognition of their hard work.
Recruitment: Who may join?
Membership is by invitation and is open to undergraduate men and women at UMass and Smith majoring or minoring in Neuroscience and who meet the other academic qualifications. Nu Rho Psi is also open to qualifying Neuroscience faculty and alumni of Neuroscience programs. Requirements for membership include:
What are the benefits of membership?
The first and foremost benefit of Nu Rho Psi membership is the honor and recognition of academic excellence. Almost all graduate schools and employers ask for a list of honors. Membership in Nu Rho Psi is a way of building these credentials. Members receive membership certificates and lapel pins as an indication of the honor. Beyond this, Nu Rho Psi membership is a springboard for the networking of like-minded colleagues interested in the study of the brain. As the Society transitions to a regional structure over the next few years, there will be regional and national meetings where neuroscientists from around the country will gather to share scientific findings. News and information will be available to members via the Nu Rho Psi online newsletter.
What is the cost?
Membership in Nu Rho Psi is for life and the induction fee ($40.00 for students; $50.00 for faculty) is the only payment to the National organization.
