NEUROSCIENCE AND BEHAVIOR PROGRAM COLLOQUIA AT UMASS AMHERST
Graduate instruction in courses and seminars is complemented by Departmental colloquia that occur about every two weeks. In these colloquia researchers from other institutions present their work to their colleagues. In this context graduate students learn about the latest developments in a range of fields and receive valuable exposure to different lecturing styles.

Those of us who attended Camp Sunshine over Fall Break (Friday, October, 8-Tuesday, October, 12) had an amazing time. Please see the slideshow of our trip under pictures. Unfortunately, the December 3-5 session is currently full. However, if you are interested in going next Spring for the February session (February 25-27), please email me at [email protected]. The full 2011 schedule is not posted yet; I'm expecting it to be posted by the end of November.

THE B.R.A.I.N.: GENERAL BODY MEETING, UMASS 10/18/2010
From Celeste DiGloria, Vice President of Nu Rho Psi:
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 19th at 7pm in Tobin 521B.
Unfortunately the speaker who had planned to come and speak had to cancel. I will try my best in the next few days to try to get another speaker. But for now I was thinking, because Halloween is in two weeks we would watch a documentary, The Lobotomist, and spend some time making Halloween Cards for the residents of the Rockwell Unit at the Northampton Rehab Center!
The Lobotomist-In the 1940s Dr. Walter Freeman gained fame for perfecting the lobotomy, and then hailed as a miracle cure for the severely mentally ill. But within a few years, lobotomy was labeled one of the most barbaric mistakes of modern medicine.
At the meeting, there will be sign up sheets if anyone would like to be involved with fundraising this year.
Volunteers: We need to meet at the end of the meeting to square away who needs to have their TB tests done. As well as volunteering this Thursday.
All are welcome and free pizza. Also there will be Halloween Treats! :)

The Northeast Under/Graduate Organization for Neuroscience (NEURON) will
be held at Quinnipiac University on November 7th, 2010.

of the meetings is to promote the education, research and professional
development of trainees.
This is a free meeting so please encourage your students to attend and
participate! In addition to a very prominent key note speaker and a few
data talks there will be very relevant workshops for all students.
Keynote: Tracey Shors from Rutgers University will present a talk

Camp Sunshine: Retreats for Patients with Brain Tumors 6/6/2010
Camp Sunshine is a non-profit retreat and camp located on the shore of Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine. Camp Sunshine provides respite, support, joy and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families through various stages of a child’s illness. The camp is currently the only program in the nation that aids in lightening the impact of a life-threatening illness on a person's entire immediate family, not just the person with the illness.
Over Smith Fall Break (Friday, October, 8-Tuesday, October, 12) and also December 3-5, Camp Sunshine is hosting patient brain tumor retreats. (I plan on attending both sessions.) I think considering our society's interest in Neuroscience, this would be an excellent volunteer opportunity for Nu Rho Psi (and any other Neuroscience majors or pre-medical students). I called the director, Michael Katz, and he told me that the October session is 3/4 filled, so whoever wants to attend this session should fill out an application online (http://www.campsunshine.org/) ASAP (and write Pioneer Valley Nu Rho Psi at the top of the application). The retreat in December has a lot of space left, but I would recommend filling out an application as soon as possible since retreats fill up quickly. Groups are limited to 15 people; so I will be opening up these slots to Nu Rho Psi members first, then neuroscience students, then any pre-medical students. I am also planning on driving, so I have 4 seats available. Please let me know via email if you would like to attend one of these sessions ([email protected]). I hope everyone is enjoying summer!
