THE FIVE COLLEGE CERTIFICATES
Mission and History
Five Colleges, Incorporated is a nonprofit educational consortium established in 1965 to promote the broad educational and cultural objectives of its member institutions, which include four private, liberal arts colleges and the Amherst campus of the state university. The consortium is an outgrowth of a highly successful collaboration in the 1950s among Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which resulted in the founding of a fifth institution, Hampshire College, in 1970.
Cognitive Neuroscience Certificate and Culture, Health, and Science Certificate
With 2,200 faculty members teaching 5,300 courses to 28,000 students, the Five Colleges together offer literally hundreds of opportunities to make the most of higher education. We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to take classes at these five amazing institutions.
Unique to this consortium are the Five College Certificates. Two certificates that overlap with neuroscience are:
(1) The Five College Certificate in Neuroscience http://www.fivecolleges.edu/sites/cogneuro/
and
(2) The Five College Culture, Health, and Science Certificate http://www.fivecolleges.edu/sites/chs/

FIVE COLLEGE CERTIFICATE IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
This program is designed for students interested in gaining experience within the field of cognitive neuroscience.
Cognitive neuroscience is the study of the mind as it is manifested in the human brain. Cognitive neuroscientists combine psychophysical and brain imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the brain function underlying cognitive abilities in human beings.
This certificate is designed to offer a unique opportunity for undergraduate students in the Five Colleges to deepen their understanding of cognitive neuroscience, through both theoretical and empirical training. The Five College Certificate in cognitive neuroscience program includes courses in research techniques, basic scientific foundations, neuroscience, philosophy, and cognition, combined with independant research. It brings together several related disciplines, each of which provides a different focus on mind-brain issues.
This certificate encourages the student to follow a program of study distinct from, and yet complementary to, current offerings such as a major in neuroscience or psychology.
The certificate is currently available to students enrolled at Hampshire College, Mt.Holyoke College, and Smith College.

FIVE COLLEGE CERTIFICATE IN CULTURE, HEALTH, AND SCIENCE
The Five College Program in Culture, Health, and Science allows students an opportunity to explore human health, disease, and healing from an interdisciplinary perspective. The study of human health requires theoretical frameworks and research strategies that integrate physical and socio-cultural aspects of human experience. The newspapers have been filled with health-related stories linking health and culture. Whether discussing beef bans and mad cow disease, SARS outbreaks, new forms of health insurance coverage, or the importance of cultural competence, these stories all describe research results arising from collaborative work among multiple disciplines. Graduate programs and medical schools are giving greater attention to interdisciplinary training, recognizing that tomorrow's health experts will need to know how to link their understandings of history, culture, and behavior with clinical and epidemiologic models of health and disease.
Students in the Culture, Health, and Science program study health and disease by linking the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students interested in pursing health careers will benefit from interdisciplinary programs in sociomedical sciences and medical humanities. The best health practitioners, researchers, and policy analysts will understand how behavior influences disease distribution and how biomedical categories change across time and culture. They will understand how to communicate research results to audiences of policy makers and to the general public. Faculty at undergraduate institutions benefit from collaboration across disciplinary lines between the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Both faculty and students will be enriched by their connections to health practitioners in their local communities and internationally.
The certificate is currently available to students enrolled at any of the five colleges.
